THE NEED DESCRIBED:
It is possible to bring clean water to hundreds of people in Sub-Saharan Africa. In many areas women and children have to walk miles each day to fetch clean water, or spend hours gathering wood to boil the dirty water gathered, which is often shared with their livestock. At present, our partner organization VITA has developed a structure where people are trained in sinking wells and maintaining the pumping equipment, within their own communities. Each successful pump in a community can serve up to 250 families. Families within the community are encouraged to maintain responsibility by contributing a very small sum of money for access to the water and to learn about the management of water. This initiative has transformed the lives of several communities where a well has been sunk and the community has rallied in order to make its management and administration a success – having access to clean water is a source of great comfort and pride in the community.
THE CURRENT PROGRAM:
This program is run by VITA, who identify communities who are ready to take on and manage the new pump. They set up the community infrastructure for the management of the pump and water and organize a system for its distribution. In line with their partnership approach, their system provides for a very small contribution from the users and this ensures the equipment and water it produces is valued.
YOUR DONATION:
Will supply children and their families in rural communities with permanent access to fresh, clean water- thank you!
