Goal: $1,500
Name: Kitchen Gardens- providing the basics of fencing, tools and seeds to households for vegetable growing
Aim: To provide 15 families with a Kitchen Garden kit in Kitale, Kenya
Cost: $100 per kit per family
Or any donation you wish to give
THE NEED DESCRIBED:
Many households have a resource of s small patch of land adjoining their houses. In very poor communities, such as the one in Kitale, if the ground is not used, sometimes the families sell the soil for bricks, thereby depleting and rendering useless the only resource they have. The Kitchen Garden kit is a novel and simple way of helping to address lack of food, lack of income and lack of motivation in the deprived areas. It was developed by our partner organization, The Daughters of Charity in Kitale, Kenya. For certain households with a small patch of land adjoining their huts, a template for a house garden has been developed. In this program households are provided with wire and poles for fencing their patch of land, seeds to set up a small garden and information on basic horticulture . Once the garden is fenced and the kit provided, the household is expected to prepare the ground, plant, grow and harvest the vegetables in order to feed the members of the household. Any excess vegetables can be sold for income or shared with another family.
THE CURRENT PROGRAM:
This project has been very successful so far. The Sisters choose the households carefully, to select those who are most in need but who will also deliver on their commitment to tend to the garden to ensure the best use of the garden patch and seeds. We visited two gardens being successfully run and can confirm it is a very economical and efficient project. Sometimes this program is used for rehabilitation and has been very successful in providing an outlet for those in recovery.
YOUR DONATION:
Will provide rural households in Kitale, Kenya with garden kits and fencing so that they may set up a small garden, which in turn will provide food and a source of income for their family- thank you!
